Default Selling the C3

I’ve been wrestling with my conscience whether I let go of my ’72 for something different. Since I bought the LT-1 the ’72 base car gets overlooked and in 2017 it’s had one proper outing, driven to a show by a friend of mine. I’m not one for collecting cars that never get driven and feel it’s a shame to be sat there with little hope of ever getting much of a look in whilst I have the LT-1.

It's a nice driver that I've done new tyres, chambered exhaust, carb rebuild, new hoses, door seals and suspension rubber but has a questionable paint finish that's pretty dull up close.

So, I’ve been checking the for-sale ads for BB 66 & 67’s and can’t find anything in the UK that I like or can afford. Importing is a no go for now as the pain of shipping the LT-1 is still quite raw.

Then this caught my eye locally.

A few miles from me at a small classic car dealership that I drove by last week, noticed the Mustang and popped in to take a look. Whilst Mustangs have never been on my ‘would like to own’ radar, I have always liked the looks on the earlier cars and this one really presents well.

So, we chat and I float the idea of a trade listing mine at £25k and that their asking price of £50k won’t work so they’ll have to come down. I haven’t shown my cards yet but need to be closer to 40 than 50 so it may not work out even if I can make my mind up.

Their mechanic came and checked out my car and the owner then agreed on my 25k valuation. The ***** in my court now to make a deal or not.

I just am finding it hard to the thought of letting it go. You’re fortunate over there with so many to choose from. Over here there’s few and even less in great condition so replacing it would not be easy if I do get remorse over it.

So maybe the all-knowing & wise C3 can help me choose and also throw some light on the Mustang, whether it’s a desirable collectable or not ?

Stuart

Hi Stuart,
I looks like a very nice car in the photos… but I don't know what I'm looking at.
I think a strong attraction would be because it's a convertible.
I googled Mid-County Mustang thinking you might contact them to see if they know anything about the car… but they appear to have closed a few years ago.
The restoration looks VERY fresh... so it's possible that someone else, (maybe in the UK), did the work.
???
Regards,
Alan

I know a Mustang knowledgable person who's responsible and reasonable if you feel you need to talk to someone about the car.

As a previous owner of a very nice '65 Mustang GT convertible, and a current owner of a '71 Corvette convertible. the cars serve/served similar characteristics of ownership for me.
Both are open air cars, both collectible, both have great aftermarket support, both are fair weather cars, both have the cool factor, etc.
In your case with already having two C3's at once, riding yourself of one, replacing it with another like type vehicle (albeit different in many ways), might create a great choice/alternate to drive when the sun comes out, as well as opening the door to another great group of fellow owners/forum members.
Good luck

While not a Mustang fan, I had a '67 coupe in high school and was never impressed by it.
I would say a corvette in the UK sounds to be like a hostess ring ding at the lunch table when it comes to trades.
Why trade down for an apple?
The Mustang drop top is the price driving factor only. 50k really?
If I was looking to swap I'd get a nice drop top early Nova, Chevelle, Malibu etc...
Keep it Chevy bro.
Mustangs locally in PA have sorta tanked like the big ticket Mopars recently.
Just my 2 cents.
Remember he's a dealer and is capable of bugger ya with your pants still on

I'll admit I don't really follow Mustang values other than a seeing a few cross the auction block on TV, so I could be way off.....But I think they are about double what it should be worth even over there....JMO

Thanks for the offer Alan. I've got to come to terms with letting a very nice and my first C3 go first. If I decide it's right, I'll gladly take up your offer.

Excellent point and one I had considered. Lets face it, Corvettes are not very 'family friendly'

Marshal.

Funny and true

I would rather keep it Chevy with a nice C2 but nice one's are hard to find and very expensive - £100k for a good one. Letting the C3 go would be a much easier decision if it were for another Corvette

Even with what little I know, it is way over priced and I've pretty much said that but they are still willing to discuss and came out twice to see the 3

Hell no. Keep the Vette. If it were me, they'd have to give me the Rustang plus $25k for the Vette!

Selling a Chevy to buy a Ford is a big no-no for me.

sorry but that 66 convertible is not a big $ car. It certainly looks nice but-
Youll have to drive one awhile and come to your own conclusion...maybe condition visually the stang is nicer still wouldnt do it if I were you.

Still struggling to come to terms with letting it go doorgunner and bailed out of calling them yesterday as was planned

I'm no further forward so to avoid making any regrettable moves will just sit it out for now.

We do get a tad emotional with these Corvettes I think

WOW!, thanks.

To be honest, now that I'm a senior citizen I wouldn't mind having a 65/66 Mustang convertible. My wife doesn't like me working on the Vette. Every time she hears a noise she runs out to the garage to check on me.

Did a quick search on Ebay for 66 Mustang convertibles. I looked at the completed listings and the majority of comparable cars sold brought between 15-25K. A few went for more, a few for less. None of the one's listed close to 50K had sold. Just another data point to look at. Hope this helps!

Some can its all in your motive for wanting to own either
15-25 is more in line, 66s just arent a sought after year doesnt mean that one isnt nice and clean though . Lots of flippers wanting appraised or tv value. Those cars sit on ebay, cl, auto trader over and over & never sell.
imo (which means nothing) 25k is top buck for the 66 sure the dealer would be thrilled to get almost twice that then list yours for 30 lol

I have to factor in shipping costs, import duty (5%) and some other small costs but, no 50k is shooting for the moon

Thanks Johnny

Not suggesting to buy one from here, just thought it would be nice to see what they typically sell for. Looking at the completed sales on Ebay is a good resource to see actual prices of sold items. Anyone can ask 50K but do they really sell at that price? According to Ebay, nope not even close! You made the right decision on this one. Now moving forward you can do your own due diligence and find the right car at the right price. Happy hunting!
