I actually got some work done this week-end. Did a bunch of cleaning of the extinguisher residue as well as had to blast and repaint a bunch of parts due to the corrosive (I'm guessing) nature of the extinguisher contents.
- Removed, blasted and painted steering column mounts
- Removed steering column
- Removed gas pedal assembly and blasted, painted and reinstalled
- Sanded and painted brake pedal assembly
- Cleaned and reinstalled brake and gas pedal
- removed damaged fiberglass. Need to pick up some resin and I'll lay a
couple layers of glass down to finish it off.
Wow...... time flies when you’re not paying attention. My joke about having it painted by 2019 was more fact than fiction...... and 2020 is probably a better guess. It’s been over a year since I’ve updated this. Have been working on some other cars, and this was pushed back into a corner. Some progress coming soon. I picked up some reproduction exhaust manifolds this week for the car. When I get back North the ceramic coated headers will be coming off and hopefully at the same time I can hot-wire the starter and see how it runs. With the headers on, getting at the starter was a challenge.
I’ll be listing the headers when they’re off if anyone is interested.
in your first post you were unhappy he scrapped the burnt interior. he did you a big favor. leaving that burnt plastic smell in the car for any time and the smell would be there still. a lot of good work.
Well with winter more or less having arrived in Canada, it’s probably time to get started back on this project. Spent a little bit of time organizing the mess the car had become. Will be posting some more updates. At least I can work on it now. I also found some parts I had forgot I had purchased. lol
It was a pretty good day today. I’ve been looking for a stock intake manifold for the car as I want to go back to stock on the intake and carb so I can use the OEM air cleaner I’ve picked up. I saw an ad for a big block intake on Springfield Craigslist for $25 (and it had been listed for over a month). I emailed the owner and asked him what the casting number was and he replied 3955287. OK. I’ll take it. For that price I didn’t even care what the date code was. While driving I sent him a text (while pulled over) and asked him if he had any other big block parts...... maybe valve covers? He replied he had some and he’d bring them along for me to look at. After a 2-1/2 hour drive, we met up and I look at the parts. The intake is date coded April 2, 1971 (my car is a June build) and the valve covers are correct for my car as well..... although will need a blast and paint. How much do you want for the valve covers? $15....
I think the 5 hour round trip was well worth it!
