I have a 69 and am looking at a set of seatbelts out of a 72. Can any one tell me if they will fit. This is a nice daily driver and not concerned about a match.
Thanks
Hi cdj,
The male and female ends of the 69 seat belts mount UNDER the seat while one side of the 72 seat belts mounts under the seat but the other mounts next to the seat.
I think the problem you'll run into is the brackets/plates attached to the underbody of your 69 won't be in the correct locations to mount the 72 belts.
Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan My 69 is an early 69 and one seatbelt with retractor mounts under the seat and the other mounts on the side of the trans tunnel. I looked in Zip and it looks similar, however I am not an expert.

Hello Chuck,
That's how mine are in my 69 except for the retractor under the seat. Its just a long male belt under/behind the seat. Not sure about 72. I thought they were the same but I'm not sure. My 69 has the longer male end running around the seat and bolting behind/under the seat. The female shorter end bolts to the corner of tunnel and bulkhead. My vert has no shoulder belt and the coupe has the retracting shoulder belt. Nothing retracts on my convertible.

In 69 the shoulder harness has retractors, but the lap belts do not. The female belt bolts to the trans tunnel and the male belt bolts to the floor way under the seat.
I do not believe the 72 belts will work without some mods.

I'm in the same boat - looking for replacement seatbelts for my early 69 vert. I was under the impression that no 69's came with under-seat retractors? And that the 72+ retractors required an additional 'indent' in the floor under the seat for the retractors? I found a few threads with unviewable pictures (thanks Photobucket), so I can't confirm that I understood correctly.
If there are retractors that fit under the seat for the lap belts, then I'd have one more choice. I'm currently looking at aftermarket 'single strap' 3 point retractors that mount to the wheel well or the Camaro/Firebird rear seat belt retrofit.
Chuck
Do you have shoulder harnesses? Evidently not, because that is where the retractors are on my 69.
Dennis
Hello Dennis,
My 69 convert does not have shoulder belts and the lap belts do not have any retractors either. My coupe has the retracting shoulder belts as I believe they were standard on coupes. If Chuck has retractors under the seat then that part of his system is not original unless that changed during the run. They did change the style of belt sometime around the 20th week of 69 I think. Could have been a little later in 69, not exactly sure.

my 69 is from November 69 and the belts as others have described have no seat belt retractor, only a shoulder belt retractor, the outter belt goes under the seat, the inner belt attaches to the transmission tunnel. Looking at the aftermarket belts the 68 to 71 are different than the 72 to 77.
68's Have a retractor under the seat on the male end.. Maybe early 69's had one too. The 68-69 shoulder belts bolted to the side of the back wheel well. On 70-72 cars they changed that to on top of the wheel well hump, I believe. Lou.

Hello Lou,
You're right about the 68 having the retractor on the male end. I never checked out the belts on very early 69s. I have belts dated 42nd week of 68 that do not have retractors but its possible earlier cars may have had a 68 design. Someone would need to confirm that.
I just remembered that the 68's had two separate belts and 69's had the two belts linked.
Maybe that is why there was no retractor on the male lap belt. Lou.
