3914678 is the correct casting number for a 68 327. The latter numbers are a VIN and production / assembly date. Does your VIN end in 400436? If so, that is likely the original block (you have a VERY early 68). The second set of numbers "V" (Flint Mi.) "0821" or Aug 21st (1967 I assume), and HE is the engine suffix (327 / 300 HP 4Spd)

Just trying to understand you say the 1st set of numbers show it to be a 68 but second show 67? thanks Phil
Hi Phil,
The engine assembly stamp indicates where, when, and in what configuration, the engine was assembled at the Flint engine plant.
All the dated parts going into building the first months of the 68 model year production were produced during the calendar year 67.
Parts were stamped with the date they were made… not what year car they were intended for.
No parts on a car should have a date AFTER the car was assembled at St.Louis, and TYPICALLY, have dates NOT exceeding 6 months PRIOR to the car's assembly date.
There are a few exceptions to the 6 month limit…. glass for instance.
Regards,
Alan
As an example… a car produced in February of 68….a 68 model year car…. could, and likely would, have a few parts on it dated late in the 67 calendar year.
...Just trying to understand you say the 1st set of numbers show it to be a 68 but second show 67?...
Keep in mind new model year Corvette production usually began in August of the preceding calendar year. As an example, 1968 Corvette production began in August, 1967. Based on the consecutive unit number (436), your car was assembled during the first week of 1968 model production. This would have been a time after August 21, 1967 since the engine for your car was ordered from Flint Engine before your car was scheduled for assembly.
