original 4 speed mounting upgrade
I have a Hurst 4 speed that mounts directly to the transmission. I'm considering going back to the original shifter and i want to improve the original shifters performance.
1. Is there an aftermarket mount that mounts the original muncie shifter directly to the tranny to eliminate any linkage twisting. Im under the assumption that most of the shifting problems stem from the tranny and shifter being divorced from each other.
2. If that's not the problem, what is the general problem with the original shifter?
3. I know about the second set of holes to make the shift throws shorter. I hear some people say theirs shifts fine while others say they are complete junk.
4.I'm looking for facts to back up opinions like missed shifts, grinding, hard shifting, etc
Thanks
Scott

They were taken off the transmission and put on the bracket to stop
The vibration that you probly hear with the hurst. I went that way on
My 67 and soon after went back to the Muncie. The Muncie works
Smoother once you get it adjusted perfectly. Not always easy to do.
My69 now gives me trouble. It’s eather reverse or the column lock out
What a pain. Just my 2 cents!

Scott: I would just take it apart and replace everything that is worn out and sloppy. Also be sure to insert the adjusting tool when installing. It's a pretty good shifter.

Alan will be able to send you picture ,it’s beyond me! . The above post
About just feeling the gate which the shifter handle passes through
May just be easier. Reverse is the hardest one for me to get right
Try reading that post . It’s close to here .

What problem are you trying to solve? My '80 came with a Hurst. Reverse was a chore, and the rest felt notchy.
I got under the car, tightened the two (of three) loose transmission arms, and replaced as many bushings as I could reach with steel bushings from a "pit pack"

It was a night and day difference. I can slap the transmission into reverse, and the rest of the shifts are pleasant. I'm pretty sure I'd have to drop the whole transmission to get the shifter off of the transmission, so I may just try spraying some brake cleaner into it from above, but even just a quick adjustment got me 80% of the way to shifting bliss.

mine shifts okay. Reverse is a hard slap but I was wanting the original shifter with reverse lockout. I think you guys have answered my questions. I may swap them out this winter while its resting and I have a heated garage finally

before engaging reverse do you shift into a forward gear?
I have had my muncie set for short shift for decades, just requires a little more effort.

I tried all the tricks and adjusted the neutral gate and shifter arms. It just doesnt loke to move over to the reverse gate. I'm eager to try the original shifter in it

Just rebuild the stock one and adjust it to the short throw holes. Mine works great, very tight and with it setup for short throw it's even better.
Here is a picture of my adjustment tool. Sorry I don't have the dimentions but I made it when I had the shifter out.
