Default T-top velcro

76 Coupe

Anyone replaced the plastic T-top Velcro pads? There are several on each t-top which hold the interior liner to the t-top. It looks like there is a backing plate holding the Velcro pad on. I Can't figure how to replace this strip? I would like to install new metal strips - they are a bit rusty.

Hi Mike,
Earlier roof panels had the velcro pads pop riveted in place.
Might that work on your 76 pads?

Alan

Yes Alan you are correct. But it looks like the pop rivets are actually going into a narrow plate with two holes. The fiberglass is sandwiched in between the plate and the Velcro. It seems if you drill out the pop rivets, the plate comes free.

Hi md,
Aren't the plates themselves riveted in place?
If not...
I believe if you replace the pads by drilling out one of the rivets, pivoting the old pad 90 degrees of the way, then putting the new pad in place (90 degrees out of place), installing one rivet, remove the OTHER old rivet and OLD pad, and then pivoting the NEW pad into position and installing the SECOND rivet on the NEW pad, the plate stays in place.
Regards,
Alan

After a year of playing with these things, I used an epoxy to secure the metal stands to the underside of the liner while the plastic t-top Velcro remained in place. I then used 3M adhesive to secure the liner Velcro pad with that on the top. This was for a 78
