Can the gas tank sticker be reached in some way other than dropping the gas tank on a 70 convertible? Sure it is still there and would like to get at it and hopefully it is still ledge able. Thanks, Rob
Hi rob,
Typically the tank sticker has become very fragile from it's age and the environment it's been in for so many years.
Trying to remove it through the gas door opening in the rear deck generally results in damaging the sticker. This is because in addition to the fragile state of the paper, the sticker was roughly glued to the top of the tank. Getting it loose often requires some finesse.
Trying to reach up over the sides of the tank is probably even more 'chancey' because of not being able to see what your fingers are doing.
For someone who really wants whatever the tank sticker currently is, the amount of work to remove the tank is worth it.
Regards,
Alan
Here's a 71 tank right after it was removed.
It was especially clean (46,000 miles?) and the sheet quite readable.
The 'smear' of glue was holding the sheet firmly and a little of the sheet was lost during it's removal.
And then take a picture of it before you try to remove it.
Thank you for you're quick responses as always. I guess this will be a project for another day when I can spend some time dropping the tank. The car has been in a garage for the last 40 years, so hoping that has preserved it, thanks again and happy holidays, Rob
FWIW on my 68 I was able to get the tank sticker off without dropping the tank. spare tire assembly off, I unbolted the tank and shifted it as far as I could toward the pass side and the rear, and I was able to snake my arm up and grab the tank sticker.
I know this is not the norm though, and I got lucky

Just curious, did you use a boroscope to see up there?

That's what I use when looking at a potential purchase. You can use one to take a picture of what's there.
Also, its worth taking the time to drop the tank. Even if you don't remove the sticker, carefully cover it and tape it up after taking some pictures. I know of too many examples of the tank sticker blowing off (or parts of it) when the car is driven. I lost part of my tank sticker on one of my cars years ago. Fortunately, it was not a critical piece with too much info on it but it still bothers me.
I was forced to remove and replace the gas tank in my 1973 shortly after buying it in 1988. My experience was exactly as Alan described above. The sticker was extremely fragile. It would have been futile to try and remove it without dropping my tank.
The first thing I did was, using a large soft paint brush, gently 'sweep' it off of as much dust as possible. Then before attempting to remove it I took some close up photo's with a macro-zoom lens (SLR's were still king in '88). After I was satisfied I had good photos, I began writing down on note paper everything I could read just as it appeared on the paper. Finally I very carefully, using a razor blade scraper, gently lifted the paper from the tank.
The good news was, I was able to remove and save about 95% of the sticker. The bad news was, it didn't reveal anything I didn't already know about the car or any unknown options such as ...Z07!
