Hi Everyone - After a long search, I have finally found my first corvette (68 roadster) and just had the car thoroughly inspected by someone with a much deeper knowledge than I. I would like to do a vin check, but it appears most of the free online searches don't include classic vins. Any recommendations on where to go? Thanks!
what you want is the NMVTIS national motor vehicle title information system report which will accept old 13 character vin and will query databases in most states as to title brand information, insured total loss information and
which states titled them and mileage when they were titled, you will not get previous owner's names.
... if the data exists.. it used to be 5$... search on NMVTIS.. or someone here might have a link..
plus.. always call the state DMV where the title is and ask them status of the title.. before you buy.
these reports are only as good and the data that they query.. of course the same is true for carfax.
i just tried the NMVTIS site, https://www.vehiclehistory.gov/. They direct you to private sites that claim they have information. Plugged in my 69 serial number on a few of them and they find a record but they seem to have very little detail to even make you want to pay them. It comes up with engine: Unknown, etc.
Hi mrl,
Often when given a chance the car will tell it's own story if a knowledgable person has a chance to get a unhurried look at it.
This would include having the car on a lift so the chassis and running gear can be checked and the underside of the fenders and underbody can be seen.
Was the person who looked at the car for you knowledgable about 68 model year Corvettes?
Regards,
Alan
