I've been working on the interior last couple weeks. My parking brake never worked so I deleted it and modified the console. increased the height to a more comfortable level for a arm to rest. I almost added cup holders but decided against it.
I don't recommend removing a parking brake. Mine was broke when I bought the car and I haven't missed it in 4 years.
Thanks for the compliment. I got a roll of fake leather from Ebay cost around 60.00 and I have plenty left over. Thin particle board from Home depot and a 2x4 stud that I ripped down to a proper size for internal framing pieces.
Started with carboard to make a workable pattern. cut board to match and used a brush on adhesive to stick leather to board. Added the rubber corner molding with 3M 2 sided tape. Stuck on the 1/2" pin stripes and thats about it.
I used factor screw locations for the sides. I only had to add a threaded rod with 2 nuts for support. You can see the one of the nuts right in the center of the pict. I have a couple of black acorn nuts ordered to replace them with.
Nice work. If you think about the e brake issue later on, look into the E STOPP set up. Not cheap, requires a little modification to the cables but it is a great option if you want to go that route. Also works well as an anti theft set up. Again, good job on the console.
Clutch car people need that parking brake. I think another idea would be build it stronger. Enough to put your elbow on it to take body weight as you get in. That's why those console covers are all cracked. I did it to my 08 Subaru too...
A buddy of mine has a seventies Camaro that is strictly off-road and he drag races it. One day he told me he would like to make the car street legal. I asked him what would that take? He mentioned all very basic stuff like directional signals, headlights (2 min), brakes, windshield wipers, a rear view mirror, no slicks, tail lights, etc.
So when I read this thread, I wondered if a vehicle needed a parking brake to be street legal? The law probably varies from state to state. Although, as mentioned above, those of us with stick shifts have no choice; we must have a parking brake.
I bet it does. My kid got pulled over for 1 of 2 tag lights out. So the right cop could be inclined to write me a ticket.
The ticket- not a big deal.
However-IF the unfortunate happens and you are in an accident without an operable "emergency brake" -that could be an issue.
The basic premise is your car should have two separate brake systems- In the C3 it's a hydraulic and a mechanical system.
I did a custom console as well- added cupholders- but went with the E-Stopp electronic parking brake Kanvasman was talking about. It uses a linear actuator to operate the emergency/parking brake.
mounted it next to the transmission-
cable- through a bracket I made up-
metal reinforcement for the mounting
here it is in action-
