Baddest 69 on the planet at BJ Scottsdale
#81
Sometimes the TV camera and alcohol helps the bidding $$$. Hopefully no buyers remorse today now that both are gone.
And I do love the car. Would I pay that much for it? Not a chance. Really thought it would end up $85k +/-. I don't care how nice it is. Custom and in reality, just a fad. A very beautiful fad, but we see them all the time, and those dated customs are a hard sell when time passes them by.....

I give all the credit to this thread!
Congratulations to the OP for the happiness this has given him, seriously!
If I was into these types, it would make me very happy to see that I "might" be able to get prices like this!
USA is Great, always was!

I'd be much more happy if I could afford the car and its sitting in my garage. I'm quite content with the one I got.
Thanks WB...after all we here have the same interests...Vetts! Whether it be original, custom or what ever. Can't we all just get along!
Glad you enjoyed the thread, I sure did.

I don't think so. Perhaps I'm still living in the 80's. I've owned this car since the mid 90's. Powered by a Jon Kasse Boss 596

It`d be a smart idea... there`s a reason they do it at casinos!
You`re probably right.... my wife keeps telling me that I don`t understand the value of our fleet.
The sad part is, those who can afford to throw down that much cash for a toy, will never really enjoy it as much as many of us would.
They`ll stick it in their museum, only to be seen occasionally by some of their close friends.

You are a hell of a modest cat not a hint of pretense so yeah, listen to your other half on the value of those gems...
[QUOTE=Hemi John;1596413935]Hopefully 2 people happy with that price TODAY lol!!

"Custom" has a new name a new look its called "restro mod" and its here,
You say "fad" i say "trend" but its gonna be here a long, long time, most c3s being build by people today are to some degree restro mods, most members cars are, if its not survivor or ncrs car, its a mod, yeah, day two mods are still mods
The threads car proves that even one done to the zenith with a price tag to match can and does have a buyer, sure one off helped but there are lots of cars like this one that do sell and for high, high dollars,
What ncrs restored 69 gets 200k plus? And there is a finite number of those,
Dated old school customs sure did go thru a down time, people didnt want them, then bought them cheap to return to stock, but now many old school customs fetch more than the same car would in comparable condition but stock,
Some old scool customs are themselves cool survivors.

So this is weird. I am getting messages from a friend who is at BJ and apparently the original buyer of the 69 fell through and they sold it for $80K, but they buyer is having "a hard time finding the VIN." I am not sure what is going on, but it all sounds odd.

WOW, this is unbelieveable? Buyer cannot find the VIN? BJ should be on the hook for that. It's their responsibility to verify the VIN matches the title. Something doesn't make sense here....
I just don't get it. How could BJ screw up the bidding like that? There is definitely more to the story and I sure would like to know what it is.

I'm more of a protouring guy. But that is one bad *** vette.
Not sure what went on at BJ, but auction fever will push some prices way, way up.
There were a couple 75 convertibles-- which I like-- that went for crazy money. They were very nice--but 30k plus is a bit much for a 165 hp- l48.
The OPs car in question has very nice styling -- stance- hp. Love the gauges and the rear deck mod behind the seats.

This reminds me of the Bugatti Veyron fiasco. Some idiot bidder with no intention or the money to buy bidding the price up. Spoiled the auction with no other takers and Jackson himself ended up buying the car with what turned out to be a steal.
Nothing could be worse for an auction house to lose it's credibility with fake or shill bidders. The previous Vette owner must be furious.

It is a very quality build, but not my style.
If I was looking for a high end build and had money to burn, it could easily be fixed with a new set of wheels and some coilovers. I'm just glad this type of work is keeping some of the old trades alive. I't will be a shame when there are no more people around with fabrication skills .....

Obviously these custom cars likely sometimes present unique problems with that stuff, but I cannot imagine how that could be missed.

I haven’t sold a car through B/J so I’m not sure of their intake process, but Mecum is very clear about your car’s VIN tag and title when you are preparing to sell. It caused me to realize a title had an erroneous 5 where an S should be and I had to scramble to correct the title before an auction. When arriving, they had a team that went over the car at intake and one of the tasks was checking the VIN tag, etc.

I had the same issue on my 68. On the title there was a "5" where the "S" should be. The sheriff's dept. did a VIN verification, made the corrections so that I could get it titled.
The car in discussion it's possible the windshield pillar where its located was removed for repair issues and never put back on properly? I don't know but sure would like to hear more of the story.
With the pic attached really cant see anything. Second pic is the car he started the build with.
