Default 1975 side mirrors

My recently purchased 1975 Corvette has these mirrors, which I do not care for. I would rather have the chrome mirrors. Looking inside the door they seem to have a mechanism that allows you to adjust them from the inside but I do not see where the controls are inside to do that. My question is do these mirrors have the same bolt pattern as the chrome mirrors?

The screws holding it in place look to be about 3 inches apart or little bit less.

I changed my chrome mirrors to the sport mirrors like yours, can't remember what I had to do. I do have a 76 mirror(driver side) that was on the car for only 5 years and then in storage till now. will sell it for $15 plus shipping. still has the original gasket with it, and mounting part is still with it. Pm me if interested. Looks brand new.

Those sport mirrors have studs on them that slip in thru holes in the door, and are attached with a nut inside.( i think they started 78) Yours looks to be placed to low than factory mirror cars.

The chrome ones have a base bracket which screws into a plate attached in the door. Then the mirror attachd to the bracket.

Youll have to see if the backing plates are attached to the door, probably damaged or drilled for the sport mirrors.

On the inside of the sport mirror a cable was attached to it that went around the window and attached to the door panel and had lever that would adjust the mirror.

On my 75 i took off the chromed mirrors and put the sport mirrors on, last repaint i went back to the chromed mirrors.

Be aware that going from sport to chromed mirrors the base sizes are different sizes.

to get the cables into the door panel is a little work(routing so they don't interfere with the windows going up & down, and cutting a hole in the door panels is nerve racking!!!

I have the sport mirrors removed, and they seem to be a bit lower than the chrome mirrors, assuming the '75 mirrors are in same as the '69. In the picture below you can see where the sport mirror was attached and above it in the glare off the paint you can see what I think is the expanded bondo that was used to fill the original screw holes. I will repair and paint over the sport mirror holes, but is there a way to index to where the original holes are? Can I assume those bondo swells are where the chrome mirrors go? Is there supposed to be a metal bracket behind there that the screws go through or is it just the fiberglass?

Thanks,

Scott

Passenger size of 1975 Corvette with sport mirrors removed. You can see what may be the bondo that has expanded from where they filled the screw holes for the original mirrors.

Also, I was able to get the sport mirrors off by loosening the bolts that position the window and removing the anti-rattle cusions. I was able to get a 1/4" wrench with a 7/16 socket on the nuts and back them off about 1/32 turn at a time. The cable that controlled the mirror, along with the joystick mounted to the end, were coiled up in the bottom of the door. It seems they were added at one point, then when new door panels were installed they just tucked the cable back in the door and said the heck with it.

That was mounted lower than the stock chrome mirror. You may not like the position of the chrome mirror if you mount it in that location.

The driver's side mirror was mounted with the plate shown by Bazza77 it was attached to the door skin.

If you have a passenger side mirror attached and are going to replace it, be aware that this was ONLY a dealer installed option. This mirror can be mounted with well-nuts thru the skin (no inside plate).

I came across a '75 car a few years ago that was basically a parts car and the driver's side mirror was removed. I made a template of the mounting holes in relation to the front and top of the door for a friend in the same situation you are in .

Some thoughts on your mirrors, Scott

First off, your original photo of the mirror as mounted on your car appears to be missing the gasket which corrects the angle to a more viewable position. That may have something to do with how you feel about the mirrors. It's a black rubber gasket with a built in angle to move the mirror outward from the car. You might get one and see if you like your mirror better

You may also have a problem with mismatched mounting positions and lack of paint where the new one is best mounted.

I have a bit of a thread as to how to mount these securely if you're interested.

I went the other way on my car, as I did like the look of the mirrors better, and, a big AND,

I got tired of continually rolling down my window to adjust the chrome mirrors because somebody had bumped it, or I was going 80 or so and it had blown upwards, or had hit some bumps in the road, or it had gotten sloppy again. It is essential to find a mirror with a good stiff pivot.

I made sure, when I did the install to cut a hole in my door's comfort weave panel to allow driver access to the adjusting toggle. On the passenger side I have a convex mirror that gives best viewing angles to that side.

I'm pretty happy with the result.

It seems you have disabled receiving private messages, but I am interested in the mirror you have for the '76.
