Sounds like a solid build plan. You could always paint up the 502 to be "stock appearing" and have the best of both worlds. I'd definitely use it...They are strong and reliable, no reason not to use it.
I'm like you, I like stock appearing stuff with hidden goodies inside... I'll never sell mine so....I'm not concerned about resale value etc etc...
Are you going back with silver? That would be gorgeous!
Yep Silver. I haven't decided if it will be 1971 Nevada Silver or an newer version but definitely Silver.
I’m about to paint my 71’, 1969 Lemans Blue....obviously not original, but it’s what I want so....purists hate me.
I love that blue, its one of my favorites. If I get a wild hair and decide to jump off the range, I would love to dye my interior red. That Silver and Red is Awesome! We'll see but, I will likely stay with black?
Well I finished stripping the paint from the big stuff this weekend. Here are the pictures of the naked body. Uncovered a couple spots that need some repair but all in all not too bad.
Minor repair to do here. This looks to be the worst of the damage that need repair.
That's a lot of work accomplished.......and a great job on the pics too.
Thanks gunner, Thats got to be the least enjoyable part of the whole job. I still have to do the hood and T tops and some other little stuff. Frame should be back from the Powder Coater in a week or two, so figured I would get the hard stuff out of the way.
Hope you are getting healed up and back at it soon.
I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. Just got back from Central Connecticut Coatings http://www.centralctcoatings.com/index.html picking up my frame from Powder Coat. Gene does great work for a far price.
I had everything done in chassis black. I know a few things aren't supposed to be black but because I plan on running Van Steel coilover suspension, some of these parts are just preserved for later anyway.
Vin number stamped on the top of the left hand main frame rail.
Pulled the trigger on a complete Van Steel coilover suspension system. The fronts arrived Friday. I love the simplicity of their system and the quality of the kit.
Its been a busy couple weekends. I managed to get the front end back together using the Van Steel coilover kit. It was very straight forward and not too difficult to install. I won't bore you with a lot of dialogue and just let the pictures do the talking.
I got back my rear differential Friday after work so I managed to get that installed with the Van Steel Delrin bushings and support plates. After that I cleaned up and painted the Gen V crate motor that I plan to use for now. I plan to restore the numbers matching engine as another project all its own after I am driving the car.
I also cleaned up and painted the driveline and half shafts so they will be ready when the rear coilover kit arrives.
Well I couldn't call it a day today without throwing the engine and trans together and drop it in the frame to check the fit of everything with the Side exhaust headers in place. Only had to dimple the pipe a little bit to clear the steering box. but it looks like they hit the bottom of the frame a bit. If anyone else has had this issue I would enjoy hearing what was done to remedy? I am still not set on using th
ese headers, I may just use my original cast manifolds or a set of out the back headers??
Nothing touching the inside of the right side. Touching the frame on the right side. This was the handy work of the previous owner. Hopefully I can smooth this out a bit before I send them to the powdercoater? Contact on the bottom of the frame on the left side. Little bit of a dimple required to clear the steering box. May have to go a bit more to account for the gasket thickness.
You make it look easy. You have been blessed by the Corvette gods with such a solid candidate. You should buy lottery tickets.
Thanks Junkie, Yes this car was in really good shape after all the undercoat and grease was burned off the frame it turned out in great shape. There was a family of mice living inside the car which made a mess of things in there but not too bad. I am building it as a driver but am keeping all the original parts and even restoring the pieces I don't use so it can be put back to stock fairly easy. After I get it on the road I plan to start in on the matching engine. That a big project in and of itself.
Thanks for dropping by my post and giving comments.
Thanks for all the pictures. I am in the process of restoring a 71 that I just picked up. I was wondering about the rear portion of the car which had some damage and your picture cleared up which side was right.
(If you don't use those headers we will understand)
Thanks for the comment Gunner,
I am really torn with this header thing. I love the look and sound they have but I think something is off with these old ones I have. From what I have read this isn't a new issue. It doesn't make sense to me why after more than 50 years these C3 big block cars have been around that you can't get a set of side pipe headers that don't interference problems??
