From interior "A" pillar photos I've seen here early C3s seem to have used green chromate primer while later (like my '79) have black primer. Is this correct or has the original green been overcoated on a great many?
Hi SM,
Early (68-72) cars had green paint on the entire bird cage including the windshield frame. I'm not sure what was typically done on later cars.
Black paint seen on the a-pillars was part of the 'black-out' that was performed in the engine compartment aprons and firewall, wiper bay, and at least part of the way up the a-pillars.
It was typically on the forward facing surfaces of the a-pillars
Regards,
Alan
Thanks for the info. I'd heard about the "black out" but thought it was confined to the engine compartment and windshield areas. I didn't understand how so many later production cars had been repainted black in the area of the kick panels. Good to know that I'm not seeing green chromate primer because it was never there

Mike, if you want the zinc phosphate primer, a company named Air Craft spruce still has it. We use it all the time and then black it out when needed.
