I need some help with my tach. It works normally sometimes, but then will just stop and fall back to 0. I can usually “tap” on the dash or on the glass face of the tach and it will go back to working for a while. It acts like maybe a lose connection. However, everything I read on line says I will need a new printed circuit.
my car is a 1976 model.
Does this sound like just a lose wire or a bad circuit board to you guys?
Also, if I need to get to the back of the tach, can anyone walk me through the process?

Ninety percent of the time, it's the circuit board and in 1976, that means dash removal. One of the forum vendors, Wilcox, has instructions of how to access the dash and replace the board.

If you do a search on tach boards, you should find some discussion threads that will offer some background into what you have to look forward to.
In terms of the board itself, the link below will provide a nice explanation of how tach boards have changed from 1976 and what to seek with a new board. Written years ago, it still has relevance today!
If so, before you pull the dash apart take the tach filter out of the circuit by connecting the harness directly to the distributer and see if it makes a difference
I had a similar problem, and thought it was the tach board because it seemed to come alive randomly when I tapped on the dash or glass. I replaced the tach board and the problem didn't go away .. finally worked out I had a break in the cable near the tach filter .. new tach filter and problem solved.

I have search the forum and even googled the internet, but I can’t find any straight forward instructions for removing the drivers side dash panel and removing the tach. Am I missing something? Surely I’m not the first person who wanted to know how to do this.

Try this link to Willcox's well written step by step procedure for removing the LH dashpad:
It involves removing the steering column but it's really a fairly simple task. Pulling the column out is by far the beast way to remove the left dash panel with breaking anything. Also check out Willcox's technical section. They have a HUGE amount C3 technical information. I used this method and it worked very well. Good Luck!

Thank You!! This is exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate everyone’s help and input.
