Default Steering Crank Handles???

I am moving rolling chassis and wondered if anyone has developed a good method for using a crank handle on the steering box to help "turn" the front wheels. I don't want to damage the teeth on the steering box so I am looking for alternatives to help me.

Have an idea, share it please. Have a solution, share a photo please.

Thank you and best regards,

David Howard

I've never tried but I would wonder if a 6point socket (english or metric) that fit nice and snug could be used if you then filed up a shim that would fit between the flat on the shaft and one of the flats on the socket. Then a ratchet and extension could work

A thick walled piece of pipe that fit snug with a set screw tapped into the side to go against the flat

Old rag joint, piece of pipe and a welder could do something

Of course you could buy an adapter (borgeson type) and weld something

Anyway, have fun

Buy 4 wheel dollies? It would make it much easier to push around in any direction.

I use those in the garage and they work well. I am really talking about when I have to move the chassis on and off my trailers and out in gravel and not when in the garage. Thank you.

Thank you. That borgeson or Rack and pinion idea might be a good one to pursue. Will check it out. Thank you.

Hi David, I had the same problem moving the rolling chassis around the shop as well up and down the driveway to the garage. With the bigblock you just can't turn the wheels. I rebuilt the power steering and was looking for a way to test it out. I installed a radiator and starter box on the chassis where I could start it up and test everything with out the body on it. I attached a handle to the rag joint and I can startup the engine and push or pull the chassis everywhere.
