Random new electrical gremlin. 1969 L-46 Coupe. All of a sudden the interior lights won’t turn off, when the doors are closed. I pulled the switches out of the jambs. Driver’s side has a white and black wire (assume hot and ground). Passenger side just has a white wire. Is that correct? These switches seem pretty simple. Is there any weak point that would fail? My headlight switch works, but the dimmer control is a little iffy. Never had any trouble manually turning interior lights on/off with the switch. Any chance there could be a failure in that headlight switch related to the interior lights?
Hi C,
Yes, .... 2 wires on driver's side switch and 1 on the passengers side switch.
When turning the **** on the headlight switch you should feel a distinct 'detent' to turn the courtesy lamps on/off.
Are you sensing that when you turn the ****?
Yes, I can definitely feel the click in the **** when rotating it.
Thanks for the input on the wiring. The switches seem so simple, that short of a wire being disconnected, I can’t understand what else would be causing the issue, unless there’s a short or disconnect somewhere else in the circuit. That’s what got me thinking about the headlight switch. Those are just such pains to swap out, I was hoping to avoid it, if there was something more obvious and simple.
Door switches are ground for the circuit (no hot) Sounds like you are getting ground to your lights from another source. Ground wire to doors could be pinched somewhere like drivers side to ground
Turns out that it was simply a loose wire on the driver’s side light socket. Once I got it tightened up and got the socket set back into its bracket, everything worked correctly again. I guess it was something to do with the grounding.
The headlight switch was on its last leg, so it got changed anyway, just for good measure.
Thanks for the feedback. Sometimes a little brainstorming goes a long way.
