I'm new to Vette body work. Took the front clip of my 79 to fix the birdcage rust. It looks like the wrong bonding agent was used, here's a pic of the firewall. Left side has what looks like a hard polyurethane on it. Does this look right, and should I remove all this crap?

I don`t see a picture either, but if you remove & re-attach body panels, you will need to remove ALL the previous bonding agent, (no matter WHAT it was), and make the mating surfaces smooth before applying new adhesive.
Yea, that looks pretty messy. Take a heat gun and you should be able to remove most of it. Watch that you don't get to aggressive sanding so you don't mess up any of the bonding points.

I have similar problems on my project car. I had to rebuild/re-fiberglass bonding points that were damaged...it was worth the extra work to have solid bonding points/areas.
The adhesive looks original at the surround panel, can"t tell from the picture if it is on the fender. A 50 grit 3" roloc on an angle grinder will clean that up in about 30 min. All the original adhesive doesn't have to be removed.
The bonding agent on right side of my car looks like yours, which I assume was the factory stuff.
I realize that I'm going to have to remove enough from the panels to have a relatively smooth surface to bond to. It's that the black stuff used on the left side looks like it there was too much put on and it didn't stick to the fender and splash well in most places. I've seen similar things on SMC jet ski hulls that were patched with polyester resin which doesn't bond to epoxy..same thing here?
How do I get to the rivets behind the fresh air intake? I can get one from inside the birdcage, but from the AIM, there seem to be more.
