Well after shearing it... I put some more penatrating oil on it and did the other studs... came back with vice grips and a few hits with a hammer - and the dern thing came out! Early Easter present!

You got lucky. I had to have one of those drilled out on a manifold one time. Buy a lottery ticket! :-)

GM used cheap soft bolts. They drill easy. Roughly same hardness as cast iron, so missing by a hair isn't going to cause broken drill bits or taps.

Excellent. Good tip too as I am staring at one of those now. Did you use PB Blaster, WD-40, or some other penetrating oil? Thanks for the pictures.

pb blaster - sprayed them in the morning before work and the evening after work for 3 days

Heating the area with a small hand-held propane-canister torch while working the vice grips back and forth works well also.
