Well it is a beautiful day in Houston today! I was out for a joy ride. Visited a family member 2 blocks off Hwy. 99 and I 10. got in my 77 and placed in drive or so I thought! My indicator hasn't worked for years. Since I was so close to the freeway it id not go into 3rd until I was on the entrance ramp with tops off windows down, radio blaring. Get up to 70 and cruising, cool air running good. I watch my gauges all the time after heat issues until changing to Dewitts radiator. No more problems and no more 215 temps. now 190 max. Well watching oil pres., temps. amps look good. Then it happened, temp climbed to 200 and I glanced at oil press and saw a drop from the usual 70 psi to 40. I glanced at the rpms and nearly fainted, it was 5200 and I new I only had it in 2nd and not drive. Never done that! I placed it in drive and watched my temp. stay at 200 and oil press. drop to 20 psi. OOHHH SH***** I knew when I heard the noise coming from under the hood it was done. got off the freeway and called Haggerty road side service. Oil press was 20 psi and temp was 200 but the dreaded the thudding and drop in pressure tells me I spun a rod bearing. Dip stick oil doesn't smell burn't. What a way to run an otherwise beautiful day. Time to rebuild. motor only h 35,000 miles and has seen 5,000 rpm before, just for so long in 2nd gear. Time to save up for my new motor. have a wonderful Easter Guys, just had to vent!
Drop the pan. Replace rods and mains. YouTube videos on polishing crank journals. You can buy .001 under rod bearings.
Yea, this crank is already 10/10. I've done that before years ago in a truck motor in my late 20's I'm 65 now and harder under the Vette. I already have a late model roller block. Guess I it's time to start my new build, just wasn't ready to start it so soon. Thanks for your reply!
