1968 Sebring
My dad passed away in 2006, and then my mom in September 2017. My wife, being the family historian, agreed to take on the massive collection of family photos my dad took over the years. I retrieved them over New Year's Day, driving 400 miles each way in a sub-zero ice storm in a single day, taking 23 straight nerve wracking hours of driving. With me I brought a large SUV crammed to the gills with bins of photos, slides, and movies. I finally got slide scanner, and thought I would share what my first couple hand fulls of a bin of 10,000+ slides revealed. Enjoy!

I love checking out what was considered in the background to be so mundane as to not deserve a closer shot. Note the Lancia Fulvia Zagato #71
Had to interesting to share the track with the Fiat 600 (see front of line)- probably Abarth, and usual contender for Index of Performance award.

Is that Green 72 LS5 still for sale? Maybe I should dip into the piggy bank and move up!

So how did my parents, my five brothers, and our St. Bernard Manfred make it to Sebring? By driving all the way from Iowa in Doc's Draggin' Wagon. My dad was an avid drag racer, and recognized the traction advantages of station wagons in the Stock class back in the late 1950's. If it was him and mom, it was one of the Vettes. But when the whole family went, well, we got there in a hurry! He would special order rather unusual grocery getters: first 1959, 1960, and 1961 Pontiac Bonneville 389 tri-power 4 speed wagons. Then came a series of early 60s 409 wagons. This was the last of the draggin' wagons, a 1966 Impala 427/425, 4 speed, and 4:11 posi rear end. One time at the track, when he was being protested after a overall Stock class win for having a car that wasn't really made by Chevy, he produced not just his order sheet and window sticker, but photos of it being unloaded off the semi-truck car hauler! It hauled a** up until my brother John broke a crank coming up our 1/4 mile lane after getting groceries...but that's another story for another day.
