Default Confused maybe or maybe not

Hey guys and gals sorry that every time I log to this great site is to ask a question, I'm not mechanically inclined so I can't help to much with Corvette problems, so as I stated before my 77 corvette was a gift from my dad but before he had it which was about 30 years somebody else owned it, so I took the vin # to find out info on it, according to the code its supposed to be a L48 but on the car it has L82 logo this is the vin 1Z37L7S417812, which one is it, and I wonder if the engine is the original engine, is there anyway to find out if its the original engine, like I said before it was a gift and as the saying goes "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" and now that I own the horse I got questions. Please can any of you great guys or gals get me out of this confusion.

For your VIN#1Z37L7S417812 - Looks like a L48 and someone put a L82 emblem on...

1976-1977: 5th Digit Options were L for 350ci, 180hp...

As for the engine most difference in L48 vs. L82 are internal like - Crank, pistons, intake, cam, compression and I believe 4 bolt main.

Other obvious are valve covers L82 had ribbed nicer valve covers, but anyone can purchase..

Hope this helps a little - Good luck...

The L in the VIN indicates the base engine. The optional L-82 engine was coded X. L-82 badges can be obtained from the aftermarket providers and added to any car.

There is a pad on the block at the front of the passenger's side head which should have two stamps on it; one for engine identification, and the VIN derivative for your car as the second.

That’s okay, because there are a bunch of us here that log on primarily to see if we can be helpful. You are going about the process of learning about your car correctly.
By the way, I recently looked at a 66 the owner received as a gift passed down from his parents. I wanted to ask him “do they really love you”? It was so rough that free was only slightly less than the real value of the car. It sounds like yours is much better than that.

Thanks Easy Mike, I didn’t know so I had purchased new L82 stamps because the ones that were on the car were broke and faded. I should have found out first about the L deal, I’m gonna have to buy some L48’s.

Nah. Just leave the L-82's on the hood. You don't have an L-82 engine...but, so what? Lots of folks do it...to impress [?] or just present itself better at a show.

If someone tells you its not an L-82, just smile and say "Thanks."
