Now for a rookie that doesn’t have a pile of shins, what do you recommend for shims to use? I looked up the supplier from your video and looks like they don’t have shims for a ‘76.

Now for the rears wheel bearings, I wasn’t planning on touching them because I heard they are a bear. Should they be fine or should I work to get them replaced?
The O-ring design takes the potential leaking issue due to the car sitting for periods of time and the O-ring not sticking like the lipped seal seam to do from time to time. BUT....the movement of the pistons in the caliper are still the same dynamic...and regardless if they are lipped seal or O-ring...that can wear on the sleeves. I know this due to the number of calipers I do yearly and I see BOTH designs fail...and when I remove the pistons for a core return...I can see that the sleeve has been worn. SO...O-ring calipers are NOT guaranteed to never leak.

PM me if you want my suggestions about the shim stock...if you plan on doing it like the video showed.

As for your rear wheel bearings...you should check them. Assuming that they are fine is up to you.

Nice project! But, the direction of it depends on how you like to spend your time. Do you enjoy wrenching, or driving? Do you think you might get bored with the car before it's done? It will take a steady stream of investment to move the project along. You'll spend less if you buy one in good condition. Also, a nicer car is like money in the bank. You can get your money back somewhere down the line if you want to move on to a different car. You can't get your time back, so this only makes sense if you like working on it. The "labor of love" thing!

iwasmenowhesgone, I’m definitely in it for the love of the C3 and what it means to me. The reason I was drawn to the possibility of this build is my uncle who past away 16 years ago this month had an early 70’s C3. Just having the car in my garage makes me think of him and the food times that we had. I know he would be proud watching me wrenching on one of them and trying to bring it back to it’s former glory. I’m excited to see where this project goes and being apart of this forum is just giving me all the more confidence that I can do it.

Alright everyone, I finally got around to checking out the passenger side body mount on the inside kick panel. Looks pretty clean to me, what do you guys think? I plan on getting pictures of the rest of them this weekend when I can move some stuff around.

Well then, you are in good shape. When a project like this takes on a meaning greater than the "dollars" spent, it not only provides the ambition to get it done, it also provides something of much greater value. Not everyone is capable of connecting to the car in this almost spiritual way, and when you hear people talking about "market value" and "upside down", you are listening to the wrong people. I really don't think folks like that enjoy this hobby as much as those who value the car for something more than an "investment". There is no doubt that my cars, motorcycles and airplanes have all brought things into my life that are far more important than money. I could not imagine the life I would have had without it.

My Dad always criticized me for being "obsessed" with this stuff, but a wise person once old me, its not obsession, its passion. I liked that description better.

Not gorgeous, but not horrible. Doesn't need welding. Not going to unbolt. Will have to be cut. The bolt, I mean.

The #2 body mount area you posted a photo of is not that bad. Gosh knows I have seen worse. It is nothing that a bit of cleaning and POR-15 products could not take care of.

I do agree...I would try to see if I could get a six-point socket on the head of that bolt ...but if that does not work I would then try my Irwin bolt extractor tool ( which have saved me time numerous times)....if it did not work..I would cut it off.

What gets my attention is the missing lower hinge bolt(s). Not a big deal ...just makes me wonder when I come across stuff like that is why they left them out...or why they even removed them in the first place....because I am seeing dual witness marks where the washer on these bolts left marks in the hinge post...which can cause me to look into it a bit more to see if I can see a repair that was performed that was not done correctly due to a previous accident.

you need to ask why the bolt only is trashed.
water coming down from top.
top is windshield/t tops.
and what has happened higher up as that water came down
