I'm looking at 1975 Corvette, which the current owner maintains is the original paint. It does appear to be, however the paint tag is painted over. Is that normally the case from the factory, or is this an obvious sign of a repaint?
How many miles? My understanding was that they were painted over, but since they were shiny stainless, the factory paint usually flaked off (the trim tag went on after primer, before the paint). There is original paint inside the rivets of my 79 and my 80, and though both have been repainted, the trim tags are otherwise clean.
This is all from memory, but a search on this forum may help, that's where I heard it.
Does the paint match the color on the trim tag? If it doesn't, that would be a pretty obvious sign of a repaint. Codes are here: http://corvettec3.ca/colors.htm

No need to search the forum...you're on target. The tag station was moved to a location between paint booths to accommodate the increase in production. As a result, in 1975 we see tags were painted with no prime and one coat of body paint color and flaked off over time.
Before then, the tag station was after paint booths and had no paint.
