Default T10 reverse lockout adjustment / trouble

I just had a new clutch and pressure plate installed in my ‘76. Ever since, it’s very hard to get the shifter to cross over into reverse.

Prior to installing the new clutch, it would move over into the reverse section, (with the T handle pulled up), without any effort. Smooth as silk. But now, it’s very hard to get it to cross over.

is there an adjustment or something I’m missing? We didn’t move any of the rods or fool with the adjustment. We just removed the clips and reinstalled in same manner.Any help would be appreciated!!

did you clean and lubricate the shifter while you had it out of the car?
you many have to adjust it if there was any change in the position of the shifter with regard to the transmission.

Are there any on line instructions about adjusting? The 4 forward gears shift perfect. It’s just the crossover to reverse that’s not working well. I have to really “******” it over to get it into the reverse gate.

I'm basing this advice on my assumption that your shifter works the same as the shifter on my midyear. Unscrew the shift ball, and remove the lock out T-handle. Put the shift ball back on and see if the shift into reverse is better. If not, your shift levers are out of alignment. If it is, the shift lever is not coming up high enough to release. I'm betting your shift levers are out of alignment and you just need to set the shifter up properly.

Any DIY instructions out there on how to adjust the shifter linkage for the reverse? The 4 forward gears shift super smooth.....and even reverse moves in and out of gear really well once you get it past the lockout gate....it’s just getting it across that gate that’s not doing well.

Its been a long time since I worked on a factory shifter but if I remember correctly there is a hole in each plate in the shifter designed to accept a pin to align them. Some had a round pin, others have a slot that takes a metal 'tab'. To adjust them, you disconnect the shift linkage from the transmission, insert the pin or tab in the shifter to align the plates, then adjust the length of the shifter linkage to engage the shift arms on the transmission. When you remove the alignment pin from the body of the shifter, everything should be aligned to shift properly. I hope that all makes sense. Its easier to do than it is to describe. Anyway that's the basics, hopefully someone here can provide more detail for your particular shifter.

If your shifter is working well in the forward gears, you may have success with just adjusting the length of the reverse linkage. I think the gates in the shifter just aren't aligned properly.

this link shows the homemade tool for adjusting the linkage. All gears are adjusted at the same time.

hey guys....I just crawled under there. How the heck do you access the linkage while the tranny is in the car? My linkage connections are right above the crossmeber. With the cross member and exhaust in place, I can’t even get my hands on the linkage clips.

Is is there anything I’m missing?

Do I have to remove the drivers side forward exhaust pipe in order to adjust the linkage rods?
