I'm the last person that should be giving advice on this one. I bought a '68 with almost nothing 68-specific left on it ('74 front clip, '72 interior, no backup lights, fiber optics, wiper door, etc. etc.) and have spent 3 years on it, all for the love of saving a good car. Which is a really cruddy business decision... If you do it, you have to just commit and not second-guess yourself.
The only reason I'm replying is to give you serious props for restoring a Europa. That is on the short list of dream projects for me. They are just weird enough to be cool. And that's a great year, too. Nice!

I think if someone was going to fake a stamp and make all the other numbers look good, they would make the last one match the others, A line factory worker that is changing numbers and loses one isnt goiing to care, just grab what ever is in the bin that is close. Other have talked about "I" as "1" and other changes.

As for the frame being the late model 68 /69 with the frame kick ups welded in, I have an early oct model with out the kickup diagonals welded in and that frame just droops in the front like a day head of lettuce on a hot day. My drivers side door bangs on the post, wont even come close to latching. It goes back to normal when the wheels are on the ground but for a torque monster 427, you're going to want those or your frame will be twisting like a Chubby Checker..

Rescue: I feel the same way about the '6'. If I was going to fake it, I sure wouldn't do it that way. Alan suggested the same thing. If I do a deal on the car, it will always be a question, but......

E.Murray: more power to you - and good on you for saving a '68! I know what you mean about the Europa's - a mish-mash of parts that came together in a really cool way. And talk about small!

20 mercury: I like your thought, and texted the owner that I may be interested in the car as it sits. We'll see what he says when he gets back to me. The link was great btw.

I truly appreciate the thoughts and ideas. Please keep them coming as I try to figure this one out. I have a vision of the finished product - just trying to make sure it won't be a nightmare.
