Used to see that a lot 20 years ago. Never saw the need to blind drivers behind at night especially stopped in traffic. White lights in back are illegal in some places.
Good way get attention of law enforcement... Any white lights besides license here and they'll nail you. Broken tail light guaranteed ticket if any white shows.
Usually that's done to get 4 brake lights. It seems someone did that but put the reverse light lens back in???
This is actually on my mod list but I'm going to use some Camero backup light housings or find something that looks good and that I like for BU lights. This is mod #38 or something on my list though.

Some previous owner did that on mine (leaving the four brake lights). I'm still not really sure why, or how I'm going to get backup lights back on it.....
Edit: I can't type correctly.

68's had 4 red tail lights.
I suppose you could re-locate the back-up lights (like on the 68's) and put the red lenses in the inner tail lights, you'd be good to go and street legal.
I have seen this on many standard tans cars when the back up light switch either fails or falls out of adjustment. Usually the driver is unaware of this problem.

The '68's did come with 4 brake lights and the backup lights in the rear facia between the tail pipes and the bumperetts. That's what I was going to do but the price/availability of '68 backup light housing is too much for me. I'm going to go with a late model housing that should be relatively cheap............someday.

I swapped the inner buckets on our 71, to give us 4 tail lights. My plan for reverse was to use the LED license plate frame, but the one I bought wouldn`t fit in the stock license plate trim. So I cut the LEDs off, and mounted them below. Did someone mention "cheap"? Twenty bucks.

That looks slick!
I've always preferred the 4 tail lights of the 68's vs the 2 but I just didn't want to install the 68 style back-up lights.
This is a inexpensive yet elegant solution.
Awesome!

Thanks! I used a scrap piece of 1/2 by 1/2 angle iron as a bracket, glued the LED strips to the bracket with weather strip adhesive. Then I took some plastic spacers, cut them at an angle, so it would sit flat while mounted to the curved panel.
getting 2 outside light type lenses and housing
would be a good way to go.
i went with the bubble light kit, in hindsight i should have gotten the 2 stock
outside type brake assemblies.

Over here in Europe, Red indicators (turn signals) are not legal. So many do as I did on our '78 and re-wire the rear lights so that the inner reversing light is the turn signal, with an amber bulb. I then hung a pair of discreet reversing lamps under the rear bumper.
The fronts are a tad more complicated, but not a major exercise. Some people are now using LED "switch-back" bulbs to achieve the same result.
