Remember...I installed an HEI distributor a few years ago.

I bought a ignition control module made in the U.S. THIS time (the last one was from China). The coil could be bad....the pickup could be bad...the round "donut" magnet under the advance plate could be cracked...the problem is, with the parts all being at room temperature they all could test O.K. because they haven't heated up enough to fail. It's kind of a "hit and miss" situation figuring out which part is failing

I think the new module will solve the problem because the spark now is yellow-looking (when it does spark) similar to when the last module failed a while back.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Andy...…….The coil tested bad between the positive terminal and the ground terminal/replaced the coil.

Engine cranks but still wont run/I replaced ignition module.

Now the car cranks and starts immediately...revs good & idles good. When I pull off a spark plug wire it is now producing a cracking spark over an inch long (rather than the yellow 1/4" spark previously)

I took it around the neighborhood at 20 mph. BUT now it bogs down under slight acceleration.....and now kills at stop signs.

I installed an under-the-hood fuel pressure gauge onto the aftermarket fuel pressure regulator. I also temporarily installed a fuel pressure test gauge to verify the new gauge.

Both gauges showed only 0 to 3 psi going into the carb even while adjusting the pressure regulator from min. to max. pressure.

The 600 cfm Holley carb should be getting 5-7 psi. The electric pump is rated 9-12 psi.

O.K. So the 5 year old electric pump is noisy and will not produce the 9-12 psi it was rated at.

So...…….Rabbits=3 ………... doorgunner=2

The electric fuel pump has a lifetime warranty....I will return it tomorrow/install the new pump/check the float levels, and let you know what happens.

sounds like a ford mustang I had. would shutdown any time any where. would let it sit would crank up and would run. It had been sitting for a while but it turned out was junk in the tank and in the gas lines. had the lines flushed and the tank cleaned.

So...…….Rabbits=3 ………... doorgunner=2
I installed the new electric fuel pump/different manufacturer--my returned pump was discontinued---that explains a lot ). The new pump is very quit compared to the previous pump.

I'll be out of town until Friday.....will adjust the pressure to 6 psi and reset the carb floats then.

I'll check in to see what you found/fixed

So...….Rabbits=3 ...………….. doorgunner=3

Since my next problem/fix isn't related to this thread I'll put the results in my build thread.

But......yes......the float arms were bent causing the flooding condition from the carb backfire last week.

However the new Ign. module and the new coil are firing up a storm

OK, that answers it. You can't slow down and make a left hand turn.

Carb was rebuilt by a Racer, You have to Stand On It and turn Left !

Hope You find the problem soon.

Well several ambulance and fire calls took out all my time slotted for working on this, and the next two weeks are camp, so I will get back to it when I return. Also wondering about vacuum. Make block off power brakes and see if there are any changes. Thanks guys!

Just check vacuum with a vacuum gauge, its easier than removing the power brake vacuum hose and it will tell you exactly what the vacuum is. If its low you may need to advance the timing a little. Unless you suspect a bad power brake booster.

try 4-5.5 psi fuel pressure, edelbrocks don't like a lot of pressure, you also need to blueprint the carb, take 2 hours to rebuild it, 38.00 kit from most parts stores, bet your floats are way off

and the previous advice is spot on, new parts don't mean good parts... same for other ppl doing your work, I find I still have to go back behind ppl who are very good at what they do and check, and sometimes I find problems... I would go through the carb and spot check float calibrations and a quick check of your linkages... sounds very much like your getting too much fuel from floats not being set to shut off soon enough.

Edelbrocks are very good once you get them right, not as simple as Holleys with all the linkages, but once they are done, you can come back in 20 years and they run the same way... I love my Holley's and Edelbrocks equally in diff ways.

OK an update on how things are going - I started simple and worked my way from there. First, I upped the idle - no change at all. Then I checked the coil - all was good there. Since the car ran great at idle and going down the road, I decided the ecm is ok, considering it is new, but keeping it on the check list. So I moved to the vacuum. First I disconnected the power brake booster, and plugged both ends of the line. And...… success!!! I went down the road just fine, and did not shut off at all! However, the braking was TERRIBLE, and I am accustomed to driving vehicles with standard brakes and even vehicles with non functioning power brakes. This was completely unacceptable. So I disconnected the vacuum advance line from the carburetor , plugged the carb line, and got an adapter to feed the vacuum advance directly from the intake manifold. Then I rehooked up the power brakes. This gave me good braking again, and the car ran fine and did not stall out when coming to a stop. I took the car to the local car show and she took second place in her class. I was quite surprised as there were some real beauties in her class and about 20 of them. However, the Lord kept me humble, as at the end when everyone was leaving and doing the customary/obligatory burnout, "Miss Obstinate" stalled out TWICE when it was her time to shine (she has a posi, and I can blame brand new tires too). As I left with my tail between my legs and to the laughter of other attendees a guy came up and said "Your timing is still off". So we are going to get together here in the near future and tweak out the timing - advancing it more and getting her dialed in. I will post more when we get it finished. So thanks to all!
