I'm in the process of making my steering box pretty again. But my (spline?) gear that connects to the rag joint/steering column is super rusty! Does anyone have any tricks to dissolve it? It would be tough to soak the whole thing in a rust remover from the store.
Coat the box with Evaporust, available at any auto parts. After you soak it, wrap it with plastic wrap and leave overnight. should dissolve the rust on the splines.

Just remember, vinegar is an acid (albeit a weak one) which can attack the base metal. "Evaoporust" works by "chellation" which will only remove the rust and leave the base metal untouched.
does the hub and spline go together and come apart well? then leave the spline alone. everything you clean off the spline teeth makes them smaller and looser in the coupler. cleanup the parts that show.

correct, after two days I mic'd some axle parts and didn't show anything past 10 thousands with a Starrett micrometer so it's not enough to worry about on most things, you do need to rinse it, and oil/paint immediately though, you can actually watch the bare metal turn light orange in about 20 mins with our Arkansas humidity.
