We just bought a 1977 with the stereo radio option and have a couple of questions. The radio seems to work fine and because the car is exactly as it came off the line we don't want to replace it BUT we think the speakers are a bit fried as they get distorted at higher volume. My questions are- are there kick speakers as well as dash speakers? The holes in the kicks lead me to believe there are.
How hard is it to replace all the speakers and what kind/where to buy? Looks like the dash speakers will be a bear to get to.

There could be speakers in the kicks if someone added them; not sure they were ever an option but that area can have speakers added. The dash pad speakers aren't that difficult to get to; you just have to be careful when removing the dash pad taking care not to bend it too much when you remove it; and the speaker wires are usually pretty short so when you get the dash pad loose, lift it only as high as you can get your hand in there to pull the wires off the speakers first before trying to remove the pad all the way. There are some technical tips on the Willcox website on removing the dash pad. I recently bought two 4 X 6 speakers at Crutchfield that I am happy with. OEM speakers were 10 ohm but they are hard to find; I bought 8 ohm and wired them in series; installed the new ones in the dash and left wiring in place so that I can add other speakers in the kicks or the back if I choose to in the future.
Front dash speakers only in 1977. These stereo radios were used in several 1977 Chevrolet model cars. The stereo radio can be wired to except 2 additional speakers because of the empty cells on each L&R connector marked + & -. You will need to find a few of these connectors if you want to add speaker wiring to your original connector.https://www.ebay.com/itm/25-Pack-Con...75.c100623.m-1

77's came with just the 2 dash speakers. You can replace them with good aftermarket 4x6's BUT don't expect then to fit the OEM mountings. You will need to do some mods.
I also added a pair of 6 inch quality speakers in the back. In each corner there is a cavity in the rear wall. This provides access to the #4 body mounts. I glassed in 3/4 inch plywood to make the back wall flush all the way across, after I cut the mounting hole for the 6 inch speaker. (I also cut the plywood a little short to allow air circulation from the car into the cavity, and insulated the sides of the cavity.) They sound great, and your carpet covers all of the plywood. FWIW, this does not hinder access to the #4 body mounts. When I did my body off, I replaced all of the interior and exterior hardware for the #4 mounts, working through the 6 inch speaker hole.
