Newbie to babysitting these classics. What kind of tricks do you guys have up your sleeves for hard plastic repairs? For example, I am painting the front grills on my 74, and the screw holes are beginning to crack. My first guess is 2 part plastic epoxy, but you guys have much more run time on this stuff. Appreciate your thoughts.
Hi, search YouTube for plastic welding with soldering iron. There's a few methods for this but basically you bevel out (melt) the cracked location and cover bevel back up with the excess plastic or plastic welding rod or same type of plastic. Some methods are uglier than others. I did this to one of my kick panels that a chunk cracked off of (carpet covered up plastic weld). I also did this to modify a gto CAI for my ls3 swap. I sectioned the plastic abs piece because it stuck out too far and covered up the radiator cap.
FYI....harbor freight sells a plastic welding kit (basically a soldering iron with a large tip). Also very handy are their plastic welding rods which come with 3 different types of plastic.
I used the dremel method here. It'll get cleaned up and painted later on.
Thought you were pulling my leg. Lego glue is actually a thing, and interesting at that. Works at molecular level to meld the parts. Now what is the likelihood that GM used the same plastic as the Dutchmen?
Lego glue is a "temporary" glue and is water-soluble....meaning that it will come back apart if it gets wet. Otherwise, you would never use those same Lego blocks again!
