A perfect candidate for the removable cross member modification and media blasting and powder coating. I love what that can do for a manual 68-72 frame. Here is my last 69 frame.

Pulling the engine to work on the tranny is a complete PITA. Someday I'm going to do a frame off and this is tops on the list to do first. Second is stiffening the frame. I think I would cut the cross member further out and add gussets to the crossmember that came back to the outer frame. Obviouly add the 69 gussets since mine is an early 68 and maybe horizontal ones from the cross member back in a location that doesnt interfere with the e brake. probably to the base of the diagonal ones. "Stiffer" would be a great improvement for these frames

I agree that stiffening the frame is a good idea. I have done that many times as well. I always check the rear gussets too and have replaced a bunch of those because that weld either breaks or is corroded a great deal of the time. Check all the welds carefully and mark those you want reinforced with a can of orange spray paint before taking the frame to a welder to reinforce. That will save you and them time and in a weld shop, or frame shop, time is money. Good luck with your restoration and let me know if I can help in any way.
Best regards,
David

Rick1025, I sent you and Rescue Rogers PM's about the brackets. Glad to help out fellow CF members if I can.

David was very generous with his time to send me several messages last night discussing shops, modifications, and in general "tips" regarding the restoration of my frame. I contacted him after striking out on a few shops knowing he has done what I'm looking to do with mine. The discussion led me to post the pics of my frame so he could answer some questions I had. As I said in my responses to him "Thank you very much" for the info and education. I really appreciate it!!

Thought I would post a quick update on here as I dropped off the frame and associated parts yesterday at the shop. I will post again with the "afters" in a month or so when they come back home.

I see you opted for the removeable cross member mod and the front lower cross member plate modifications. Looks fantastic and K&L did a good job for you. Great to see. Congratulations. David

Hi David,

Do you offer the flanges for sale for the removable cross member?
I have seen them in several posts with no mention of availability.
Thanks,

James

When I designed them and had them custom made I purchased 10 sets (four flanges per set) and I sold five sets of them for what I paid to make them and I used four sets on my car frames. I have only one set left of them and those are committed to my 1970 roller manual frame Spring project. American Powertrain sells a similar set for $141 plus shipping I believe, and they are a business, I am a hobbyest, so best to buy from them. I keep getting in trouble helping CF members out so I no longer offer to sell them. It cost me $75 to have a set made per set for four brackets and the eight bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts; all grade eight; plus $10 shipping using USPS so that will give you some idea why I set out to do my own.
Thank you for asking.
David

David, Yes they did a great job with my frame! It is beautiful now compared to what it was before. Thanks again for your help and getting me connected with them

I wasn't going to do the removable crossmember but the more I thought about it, it just made sense to go ahead and do it just in case I needed the ability to remove the transmission later on. The boys told me they were doing the front crossmember mod on all the frames now so I let them handle it how they saw fit. It turned out really nice! Can't wait for warm weather to start putting it all back together.

James, I purchased the set from American Powertrain that David mentioned.
