Default 68 non tilt column


Does anyone know if 68 non tilt column is rare and did they come with wood wheel?
i need a steering wheel and this one is $85 complete i figured maybe use the wheel and sell the column?
i know its not correct for my 69 but i like the wood and the price is right

All 68s had the wood like steering wheel. The Black Book says 6477 cars had the tele column.

the steering wheel is simulated wood made from plastic. the last time and only time real wood was used was from 64-66 with teak.

The 68 plastic wheel is really a 67 wheel carried over. As such, it has a one inch larger diameter that bites your right leg when you get into your car. This is why they came out
with the one inch smaller black rubber wheel in 1969. Lou.

If you're thinking about putting that wheel on a 69, be aware that the 69's used a 15" diameter wheel, while the 68 is 16". The extra inch won't keep you from using the wheel, but the smaller diameter wheel is a little more comfortable to live with. I think the dish of the 68 wheel is slightly deeper than the 69 also, bringing the wheel a quarter or half inch closer to you. Finally, if you haven't noticed, that wheel is cracked at the bottom, which is pretty typical of the old plastic steering wheels, but not cheap to have correctly restored.

Still, that's not a bad price for a 68 straight column. Even without a wheel, they usually sell for $75-$100. Since many of the parts used in the 68 column, were also used in the 67 column, parted out that column could bring twice the asking price.

There were no "tilt" steering columns in '68. The only optional column was the "tele" column which could move in and out (but no tilt action). The tilt columns started in '69 for C3's. The photo shows a standard steering column with what appears to be a '68 plastic/simulated-wood steering wheel.

the column isnt worth a whole lot but the wheel is worth $125-200 depending on cracks and who is buying
