rag joint replacement
I replaced every front suspension part on my 68 convert three years ago except the steering column rag joint, which was in good condition. I have got hooked on having the engine compartment look like a show car, so today I replaced the rag joint, just so it would look new. Bad idea. The new reinforced rubber part is slightly larger diameter than the old part, so it expanded the steel piece that bolts on and now that steel piece rubs on my headers. So tomorrow I get to crawl under the dash to drop the steering column again and take the whole rag joint off to use my grinder to remove enough steel so the rag joint support piece does not rub the headers. I love doing repairs twice. Not.

Best to compare 'new' replacement parts with the 'old' original parts for any differences before re-installation. Aftermarket parts are made to look like original parts; but many times they are not the same and do not fit, work, or last like the originals. Always be suspicious, until you are satisfied that a replacement part will do the job for you. NEVER assume that it will...
