Default Tyre pressures

Ok, 72 383 small block m20 4 speed 3.55 resr. I’m running 15x8 all round 235x60 front 255x60 rear, tyres bf goodies

i pumped tyres up to 40 psi and noticed when cornering a little hard getting tyre squeal front wheels plus it feels a little light. Just wondering what the best tyre pressure would be for this size tyres. I’ve backed off a o 38psi but haven’t tried the twisty road yet

what you guys using with similar tyre sizes

40 PSI? Cold pressure? Surprising there'd be any squealing at that pressure. That's high. When they heat up what are they, like 50? That's way too high. Try a normal range like 30-36.

'Normal' pressure for those tires on a C3 would be about 30 psi. 40 psi is way to high for them.

yeah thats when cold. Ok, I guess being too high a pressure the tyre on the road is more rounded than flat so it s not gripping as well, now I think of it makes sense. thanks for the help.

If you have 15 inch rims than set tire pressure to 35psi.

This is the answer. You can go up or down a couple psi to see if either direction feels better or worse but about 30 psi on these cars with radial tires is correct for normal driving.

Default Measuring Tire Tread Depth with a Tire Gauge

With 40 psi, you will likely be wearing the center of the tread out well before the edges.

One method to see if the tire pressure you are using is a good number, is periodically perform tire tread depth checks with a tire gauge.

First, establish a good "normal" pressure you want to run. Then using a tire depth gauge, check the tread depth across the tread and keep a record, recording the mileage and depth at each check. Check the depth near the outside edge, the center and the inside edge of the tire tread. Then about every 5,000 miles take another reading and record it.

https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiret...180902021637:s

Generally speaking and if the alignment and camber is good, you should start to see the depth change. If the edges are wearing faster than the center, your "normal' tire pressure is a bit too low, if the center is wearing faster than the edges, pressure is too high. You can adjust the pressure up or down accordingly, a couple of psi and recheck in another 5,000 miles. When you can check the depth and see the tread is wearing equally across the tread, you have a good "normal" for that vehicle.

It's important to monitor tire pressures during the test so that pressure remains relatively constant to not affect the test. Use a cold pressure setting as the normal.

Good luck... GUSTO

I've painted a stripe across a tire and gone for a lengthy highway drive. Checked to see if the stripe wore evenly across the tread. Gives a general idea.

Not a bad idea.

I use a Digital Laser Infrared Thermometer, Temperature Gun, to read tire temps at the track for a quick reading of tire pressures to run on a given day. Equal temps across the tread of the tire is what I'm looking for.

However it's important to take the reading after a relatively long straight stop and not at the end of significant twisties to be sure you get a valid reading. I think the same might also apply with a paint strip.

Good luck... GUSTO
