Default GM Part Numbers

I have a '73 coupe and an assembly manual. Almost every page has a list of part numbers with descriptions, but no real information as to the size of a bolt, nut or screw size, or it's length. Is there a data sheet I can refer to, in order to make sure I'm installing a part in the right place?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Rob

Personally I love the GM Parts Division Illustration Catalog for the Chevrolet Corvette. Mine is 1953 through 1978 which works well for me.

Front cover of the manual.

Example of inside diagrams showing the parts used.

Detail of those components. Notice the bolts. Example, item #70. Bolt; 11/16-16 X 7/8". A pretty good guide for bolts, parts, etc. It even has details on cotter pins. It has helped me a great deal.
Worth an consideration.
Good luck in your search.
David Howard

I'd like to thank both MelWff and David Howard for getting on the right track.

Just need to realize that the AIM was a document developed in the Corvette final assembly plant and for use during the final assembly process. All of the parts (and part numbers) shown in the AIM were designated on bins, etc of those parts at each assembly station. They did not need the specifics of the part configuration, as long as the bins they were in were properly identified. That's how the assembly process worked in the 1970's. To understand WHAT the part is (particularly fasteners and common hardware parts), one would need to have the complete parts catalog which provides part number AND part description. Fortunately, the needed documents are available...not readily available, but they can be found.

Glad to help out Rob. These manuals are available, bought mine on eBay, and it has been very helpful in getting the right parts identified and located for my 72.

Expanding on David's example of item #70 bolt you will also see the group number 5.002 (same line far right). The next step would be to exit the illustration section and open the index section Gr.5.002. Looking for a bolt, same measurements, I find the years 65-82, Y (vette), part number, LH or RH and how many used in this area. If the Group number listed is 8.900 good luck. Go to ebay and type in 3864119. About 25% of the time you get lucky. As newer catalogs were printed some part numbers may have been superseded to a newer part number. My parts catalog is from 53-82.
