Hello,
I have a 1971 corvette. It was my dad's it is getting restored. The first person that worked on the car removed the vin number plate. I am trying to find out if the vin plate goes on the window pillar or on the lower corner of the dash. When I do searches line I find it in both locations. Is there a way with the vin number to find out where the vin plate was originally located? Thank you in advance for any help.

WOW I have never heard of a VIN tag that was removed for any other reason than the windshield frame was rusted out it was stolen or wrecked.Either way not good. Do you have the ORIGIONAL TAG/
If the windshield frame was NOT what that mechanic was working on, he/she might be a thief who will will be using that VIN plate to make another [stolen] car legal. The other possibility is that the VIN plate on Dad's car wasn't there before having that work done. You will have to be the judge on that issue.
If you can't get the VIN plate back, you will need to go to your local BMV and get a state-issued VIN put on your car (door jamb area). That is not the best situation when you go to sell the car. If you can PROVE that your mechanic removed that VIN plate, you might want to 'suggest' that a legal suit might be initiated if that plate doesn't appear in short order. It is ILLEGAL to remove a VIN plate from a registered vehicle.
