Replacement A/C Compressor Failure
About two years ago I bought a "Four Seasons" brand A/C repair kit (compressor, accumulator, expansion valve) kit from Rock Auto for my '79. This is an R4 compressor.
The compressor didn't last more than four hours of operation before developing a leak!
I replaced it with a "professional" AC Delco (also from Rock Auto) and the quality is FAR better--heavy castings instead of cheap stampings; a much more substantial clutch mechanism; far nicer seals at the connection; a reassuring "whoosh" when I removed the connector cover that told me it was under substantial vacuum.
