Lower shock mount
Ok, on to my next issue..... Putting the lower shock mount on to the spindle and strut rod, the shock mount won't go in all the way. There's enough thread coming through to get the nut on, but almost a 1/4 on the shock side still sticking out. what am I doing wrong?
Sorry oldgto, I used your pic to point it out.

Do you have the right one in for the right side. The shock mount has a flat spot. This goes to the bottom. There is a left and right side shock mount. It usually will go in almost all the way then you can pull the rest in with the threads. The knurled part up close to the shock mount when correctly put in usually needs to be "pulled in"

I do not use the threads to pull this into the spindle support.
I will apply some tension by tightening up the nut but then when it gets tight I will hit the shock bolt to drive it in. I do not KILL IT by hitting it...I hit it and then when I go to tighten up the nut that was TIGHT before,...now I can turn the nut some more and NOT wear out the threads. REPEAT until you can torque the nut as required.

I would be too curious about why the shock mount wouldn't 'fall in place' rather than start with the hammer. Should all that effort be necessary, i can't remember having to do that, guess just sometimes you have too because not all knurls are created equal.....

When installing FRESH lower shock bolt the splines on the bolt are aggressive and need to BITE into the casting. SO...actually you do not what it to fall into place and bottom out with no effort
IF it does fall into place...then the chances that the shock can rotate is possible IF the splines are not biting good into the casting even though the nut is tight.
The flat side on the bolt is NOT that precise to the casting flat spot to hold the bolt from rotating. And KNOWING that this bolt is soft...due to many people try to beat it out without the correct tool and smash the end. this bolts is softer for reason and not hard like a grade 8. The flat spot is to index it to its correct relative position GM wanted for assembly. They made it 'idiot proof'.
GM would not have put splines on the bolt if they only wanted to used the squeeze of the nut to hold it on place.
Actually I BET there is a special tool GM used much like that of a the tool used to correctly install wheel studs where NO stress on the threads of the bolt while it is being drawn in it due to the nut is not turning on the threads.

the cup only goes under the spring according to AIM, also when you buy a kit there is only 2, not 4 . I wondered about it because my car only had them in the trailing arm and not under the spring and they were peened at the trailing arm.
