Default 69 OE sidepipes

My oldest son is dead set on installing my old set of original 1969 factory side pipes with the original factory baffles on his 70 LT. He went to great expense for a great stereo system and no matter what anybody says, he wants to hear it more than the exhaust - yes, those Millennials!

He doesn’t believe me about the horsepower and even more torque loss the solid lifter motor will give up.

Has there ever been anything tested by the manufactures or any reputable sources that show just what you lose on this swap?
Thank you,

I understand both sides of the issue. I have a '69 Camaro with the factory style chambered exhaust system. Looks like 4 glass packs under the car. Sounds like a redneck pickup truck. It robs HP and is so loud that GM decided to cancel it back in '69 a few months after it was introduced. My particular car was early enough to come with it originally as standard so the dilemma is.......give up some HP and keep a piece of history intact? ....or use something quieter that is more efficient, politically correct and less obnoxious?...... I am not racing anyone and it rumbles down the road just fine so....screw the noise and the HP loss. I will get hearing damage AND street cred!!!!

The 69' sides were not the best flowing pieces for sure.....but it beat the hell out of the 2" under car system that GM used after 68'.
The 69' exhaust was so terrible that when I put a 2 1/2" system under it with chambers is lower the idle 200 RPM.....on a tri-power car.
Have him check out Classic Chambered exhaust for updated 69 side mufflers that actually flow.

I have the OEM covers on my '70. I also have Sanderson headers and the high performance side pipe mufflers from SweetThunder. They're loud and obnoxious but flows well. He'll have to decide - side pipes or stereo!

Have him look into sweet thunder side exhaust and just use the 69 covers. I have their 2.5 exhaust pipes, not to loud and plenty of fun. I can hear my pipes and my stereo and its a vert. you may have to call to get a small block version of the 2.5 inch exhaust, Idont see the option for small blocks listed anymore

FWIW, I put a set of "Mid-year", 2-1/4" chambers from Allen's on my '69 L71 (an original N14 car). They fit nicely under the factory covers. I thought they sounded great during cam break-in in the garage but, I haven't been able to drive the car yet so I don't know how they'll sound on the road. The sound of the exhaust in combination with the clatter of the solid lifters was music to my ears but that's just old-school me

If anyone's interested, here's a video my son took of the cam break-in:
