Default Paint question

1969 lemans blue was that a metallic? Can I use a single stage poly? Anybody know the ppg # for single stage poly? And what would be a good primer. I'm thinking about 2k. primer. Thanks

It is metallic . I just repaired a 69 Chevelle . I would suggest you use base coat clear coat. Jbl

Agree, LeMans blue is a metallic, And, 976 LeMans blue is different for 1968 and 1969, hmmmm……

(I think poly in the GM literature means metallic)

Agree. bc/cc, check out Southern Polyurethane Inc website. And single stage metallic is hard to avoid getting mottled when you buff it out. bc/cc avoids this as you are buffing the cc.

Check the paint section here and ask Dub and Porchdog.

Hope this helps.

I literally just bought the 1969 Lemans blue paint from PPG 2 months ago. The PPG code is 2083 but, it takes 7 toners to "make" the color. The painter gets all of the toners that the code break down shows, then he mixes it. 1968 and 1968 have the same GM code 976 for "blue" but they are different paint codes by manufacturer, and definitely different in appearance. This was using base coat/clear coat. I don't know if they can do it in single stage... The base coat alone looks crazy until the clear is shot on it.

Its worth the effort though to create the real 1969 color, it is gorgeous.

It would be really interesting to see the two colours side by side.

Just my opinion but.... the 69' Lemans blue pops a lot more then the 68'. It has a lot more metallic, pearlescent/translucent color to it. Its just a much "deeper" color. A LOT of this is dependent on how the paint is mixed, the base primer its shot over and the clear coat itself. But even factory oem paint jobs, the 69' was more vivid then 68'... Both are pretty, but 69' is just "more"....

Ironically, the 71' Mulsanne blue is also GM code 976 and looks similar to Lemans blue, but still doesn't have that POP...

Thanks, it’s just my opinion, but I did a lot of research on this topic recently as I was painting my car and wanted to replicate the 69’ Lemans Blue. My painter was telling me all that was involved to get the color just “right”. It was worth the effort..
