If your transmission is shifting properly, it's fine. When it fails, the tranny won't shift ranges until it's wound up pretty tight. Also, if you just pull off the rubber (vacuum line) hose, you will likely get trans fluid coming out (bad diaphragm). You will definitely know when it fails.
I would keep the original modulator in there as long as it's willing to work OK.
