What fits
Rebuilding the engine in my 78. Putting on Vortec heads. What is a good performance manifold that will fit under the stock hood? I will be running a carburetor. Thanx
If you go to Edelbrocks web site, there are a number of intakes with footnotes stating: Will not fit under blah - blah - blah.
Here's the secret; Get a "drop base" air cleaner of around a inch and a half drop. You can then still use a 14" diameter filter cartridge and still be 3" tall. But you will be limited on intake manifold options using Vortec head bolt pattern.
Their web site will also show carb pad height. Compare those figures with stock height. Then you can simply figure out how much room you need, via drop-base. Check out Summit for specialty air cleaners.

Measure your intake height. Drop straightedge on carb flange front to back. Measure from bottom of China wall to straitedge at front and back. Add together and divide by two. Now loosely wad up aluminum foil and put on top of air filter front and back. Close hood. Measure foil puck height. That is current clearance. Now you can add manifold and subtract air filter and figure what can fit. Assuming same carb.
