On my 1971, I am looking for frame vin. ,I have looked just in front of number 4 body mount on top of frame for it. Frame has been painted, how far in front of #4 body mount and is it in on the inside or outside of the fuel line that is bolted to frame. Is it better to sand area down or use lacquer thinner on frame to locate the vin? Any pics?

I think I just hit it with some scotch brite and maybe paint thinner.

Did that, still cant see anything, just maybe a blurred number or two. My close up vision isn't the best.
looked in front of bolt that holds brake line in place and in front of mount on top of frame.

If you take a bunch of pictures and then look at them blown up on your computer, you might be surprised. I when I did this on my ‘58, I couldn’t make the numbers out in the mirror. On my computer screen, they were clear.
Thanks, got a light up in well with my magnifying head lens on, got a side view of S and my 6 digits.
with the body off it would be easier but I foundthem. The previous owner said the numbers are up front also and stenciled on the side
thanks
