Default 1971 Corvette Frame Vin

On my 1971, I am looking for frame vin. ,I have looked just in front of number 4 body mount on top of frame for it. Frame has been painted, how far in front of #4 body mount and is it in on the inside or outside of the fuel line that is bolted to frame. Is it better to sand area down or use lacquer thinner on frame to locate the vin? Any pics?

Both frame stamps are on the left side of the car (driver's side). Stock fuel lines run down the right side. You're looking on the wrong side.

This is my friend's 71 when he did a body off. Right under the bolt, driver's side.

My frame looks the same after being painted. Wonder if I used sandpaper or lacquer thinner to remove the paint to see the numbers.

Brian,
Did you sand that area down and what grade did you use. So that stamping can be anywhere forward of #4 mount.

Did that, still cant see anything, just maybe a blurred number or two. My close up vision isn't the best.
looked in front of bolt that holds brake line in place and in front of mount on top of frame.

If you take a bunch of pictures and then look at them blown up on your computer, you might be surprised. I when I did this on my ‘58, I couldn’t make the numbers out in the mirror. On my computer screen, they were clear.
