Greg, I believe there are other way cheaper ways to do the same thing. I started doing some research, but never followed through. You can buy a GPS tracking device and a minutes package and it will tell you were the device is on your phone at all times. If I remember you most first report your car stolen then the LEO gets the info from LoJack.
There are also very, very inexpensive devices but they rely on the proximity of another member's phone that has the same app to work.
So lots of ways to get it accomplished but again I never got into the details. I am sure someone who is more tech savvy t will chime in!!! Ike
With the popularity of GPS, I believe LoJack is now obsolete. Some new cars are equipped with GPS tracking systems and there are many available for your car, dog, or kids if you want to use them. You'll have to notify the cops yourself, but you can easily track your lost possession.
Hey C3 Stroker. Greg’s question has got me rethinking the gps device. Does this one not need a SIM card to work? And does it not have a monthly contract?? That is why I didn’t go forward a few years ago.
iUs the one you posted a good one?? So many no names it’s quite confusing!!!! Thanks Ike

Since these devices are similar to cell phones, yes they do have SIM cards and monthly contracts. I don't have one, but I would use one instead of LoJack or OnStar if I wanted one in a classic car. Google and check which one is right for you, prices and services vary, but most are $25/mo. or less.

Not sure about the GPS device, but they have those things like TrackR and one other one that are normally used for keys. They are dependent on someone nearby having the app and bluetooth though.
Just curious if anyone here is using this on their Corvette.
Are you happy with it?
How was the cost and installation?
Thanks, Greg
Hello Greg,
I checked into Lojack and thought it was a bit pricey imo. I went with a portable GPS device in my '81. I pay a service to monitor, report, map, etc. I have been extremely happy with the GPS unit and the monitoring service. If I work on my car the app sends me an email that the vehicle moved. I purchased the Americaloc GL300 from Amazon for about $100. Feel free to send a PM if you have more questions.
Thanks Craig, This is excellent info. Does yours source its power from the car's battery and does it have any type of back up battery of it's own?
Greg

Help me out with this, because for some reason I'm not getting this... why do they only have a 2 week battery? Is the assumption you'll only put this in your car when you are in some sketchy neighborhood? I see that some are wired, which eliminates this, but a 2 week battery life is short. I'm looking for something to put in my 2 classic cars, one in each of my waverunners, and who knows what else. I just want something that will let me know where it ends up if stolen. It sounds like these will, I'm going to see if they give out multi-device discounts.

Post #9 above. The tile is 4/$100 ($25 ea). The battery lasts on average a year. The downside is it is not GPS, they need to be within about a 40ft range of another tile or user of the tile app to locate your stolen car.

Maybe 2 weeks is how long the extra back up battery lasts once the existing car battery is removed or disconnected? It could be rechargeable and stays topped off if the main battery is present.

I have some homework to do i guess. I would love to have some form of tracker installed in my car. Hell, about the only thing that does not function on my car is the factory security system. The seller didn't have a key for it. I'll do some searches here about that also, but one thing at a time.
