Default Distributor tach gear brass thrust install?

Ok, When I got my 65 l78 together the original distributor needed bushings. So I did not want to wait for that. I just grabbed another I had. Any way, I bought the fixtures and stuff too drill and tap for the tach gear thrust bushing. That distributor looked just like my 68 pictured here. It had a recessed channel and alignment “tit” for gear too sit in.

now when I did the other distributor, by the time I installed the small brass thrust the set screw was not needed. The slitest amount of pressure on the thrust and it would not mesh properly. So I just ended up running with out the set screw. Everything seems too work fine. But now that I look at the 65 distributor it has a flat surface for the tach drive gear. So maybe it will need the set screw for proper mesh? Has anyone ran into this before? Here is the picture of the 65 distributor.

I hope this makes sense?! Give me your thoughts here guys!

no kidding? so the tach gear must be worn also? or is it harder then the housing and digs its way into the housing? so is the housing junk, or can i machine it flat and install the bushing then ? thanks troy

Tach gear is hardened, the distributor body is just cast iron.
The gear will wear the housing as seen in your first pic.
Probably salvageable IMO (the housing that is, the gear looks trashed).
I drilled and tapped my housing to accept a ball-ended set screw so I could adjust the free play of the gear.
Works like a champ.
