Default Blower motor cage is visable?

I recently purchased a 69 vette. I replaced the heater blower motor and happened to look down through where the cowl vent intakes are, and I can see the fans cage. I'm asuming something is missing? I would have to think if it were raining it would blow water right insde the car. Any help is much apreciated.

On AC cars there's a door there that closes it off when on Max AC so the cabin air is recirculated.

That is the fresh air intake and the cage (when running) will pull in air from that opening. Nothing is missing.
