Just finished rebuilding the shifter on my 72 and got it back on the ground. The one thing I know is in the future is a clutch replacement. It engages close to the floor and can't be adjusted higher. When I was working under the car, I noticed that while the previous owner replaced the exhaust from the downpipes back, he welded the exhaust to the downpipes. He welded them at the mufflers too. Am I correct that the downpipes have to be removed to remove the transmission? If so, it will be a pain in the ***. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.
If you need to remove the downpipes and everything is welded, pick a spot where the pipes are straight further back, maybe somewhere between firewall and crossmember, cut them both so that you can drop down pipes and then reassemble using sleeve clamps when you put it back together. They work very well.
If you cut behind the crossmember like I did here, just make sure you keep it close enough to the front to get your down pipes out (I have headers). Also know that on the older manuals you cannot remove the crossmember as it's welded in.
