I have a 1971 corvette with AC. I have removed my evaporator core and I was wondering what the ambient temperature switch does which is located in the blower motor housing. Based on what I have read is that below freezing temps it will turn off the compressor? Is there a way I can test my switch? I put a meter on it and it read 0 ohms, I then put it in the freezer for a while and retested, hoping that it would open and show some kind of reading but it didn't.
The wiring diagram from Willcox for a 1970 indicates the ambient temperature switch 'Opens Below Freezing Temp'. The switch is shown in the upper left portion of the diagram.
You said you put the switch in the freezer so it looks like your switch may be bad. You could also try testing the switch by placing it in a bucket of ice to see if it will open.
So it sounds like I can just put it back in and connect the wiring and the AC will function properly....unless it is below freezing the compressor won't shut off. Like Big2Bird stated we don't drive them when it's that cold anyways. Plus a used functioning one is quite expensive.
