Alan 71 was a big fan of Krylon 1613. You may be able to source it from an industrial supply company. You won't find it at Home Depot. Here's one of many posts about it.
The metal flip-up panel in the image below was painted by me (the shift console is a repro, the shift indicator with cell-phone magnet is 3D printed). I used a coat of Rustoleum self-eching primer, and two thin coats of Duplicolor Engine Enamel, low gloss black, DE1634. I was surprised how well this came out.
