Default How to fix a shallow thread that Bubba got too

So what does Bubba the Meathead and part time mechanic do when he looses a bolt for the sombrero or tophat that holds in the rear end? He shoves a metric bolt in there and cranks on it until the threads are stripped and gone. Well some time ago it was pointed out to me that theres a threaded insert called a Timesert that is a thread repair that is made for soft metals and would work for shallow repairs as well. Its not like a helicoil which is wound steel that needs an outer wall to support it. Its a solid piece that locks itself in.

It installs just like a helicoil but it saved my but on this mess.

my baby's beautiful rear end

heres the thread repair insert that has a tapered shoulder

tap it just like a helicoil

the hole in the sombrero just happens to be the size of the shoulder so I dont have to use the countersink

use the tool to insert it and when the shoulder hits you keep going to open the base to keep it from backing out.
I also used red locktite to lock it in as well

how it fits nice and flush

I forget who tipped me off to these babies but I want to thank you. They are pricey but worth it

RR, Nice work sir, those timeserts are very handy, much nicer than a helicoil for this application.
